300 E. Amos inside Hesston Elementary School
(620) 951-0148 Rachel Jantzi

The School-age Program held at Hesston Elementary school provides before and after school care for children kindergarten through fourth grade. The before school program begins at 6:30 a.m. and continues until breakfast is served. The program continues with the school dismissal bell at 3:05 and closes at 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. On those days in which school is not in session, the program will operate 6:30 a.m.-6 p.m.
The program is facilitated by a program director and staff who are there to encourage recreation while building self-esteem and social skills that will help them succeed in and out of the classroom. This is not an extension of school, therefore we do not offer educational support. However, if a child chooses to work on their studies we are equipped to meet their needs. Each child is provided with a nutritious snack on their arrival and is then given free choice of indoor games to play. As the last child finishes snack, we head outside, play group games or take advantage of the gymnasium. All activities are appropriate for the varying age groups found in our program. Safety, Respect for Self and Respect for Others are encouraged within the Hesston Afterschool Program.
Summer Camp May 31 - Aug. 12, 2011
The Hesston Summer Camp begins after school has dismissed for the summer and operates until school begins again in August. The goal is to keep your child safe, actively engaged and entertained throughout the summer.
We are open 6:30 a.m. until 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The summer program consists of a program director and an energetic staff that will maintain a safe and fun environment while your child learns about and explores the world and their place in it. Each week falls under an overall theme for the summer and is run very much like a typical day camp. We visit the library, go swimming twice a week at public pool, do crafts, have quiet times, reading times, play outside, go on 8 field trips, explore the town, view films and simply strive to enjoy the summer months. While the atmosphere is fun, it is still structured and skillfully supervised. The children are fed a nutritious breakfast, hot lunch, and snacks plus are provided many opportunities to succeed in learning and growing throughout the summer months, preparing them for an exciting school year. We also do some activities with the residents of Schowalter Villa.
Fees: $125 for 5 days/week, or $110 for 4 days/week, or $100 for 3 days/week. Includes breakfast, snack, a hot lunch each day,
eight field trips, and twice weekly swims at Hesston Pool.
This year's theme--
Fiction to Film: A Journey through Awesome Kid's Books
May 31-June3 Diary of a Wimpy Kid, book by Jeff Kinney -- your children will learn how to journal and the art of cartooning,
meet martial arts instructor Chris Rangel and see and learn some sweet moves.
June 6-10 Little House on the Prairie, book by Laura Ingalls Wilder -- we will visit either a heritage museum or Tallgrass Prairie preserve,
make our own butter and jelly, live and play as settlers.
June 13-17 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, book by Roald Dahl -- invent our own creations to share with members of the community,
visit Cero's Candy Shop and take a tour of their candy making area, earn our own golden tickets with a talent show.
June 20-24 Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys, books by Carolyn Keene and Ghost Writers -- we will solve our own mysteries through fun clues,
make our versions of Scooby snacks, visit an area police station and learn how they keep us safe and solve mysteries, too.
June 27-July 1 Charlotte's Web, book by E.B. White -- spin our own giant web to be displayed all summer, visit a local farm and
see some 4-H showings, learn about the value of friendship.
July 5-8 Ramona and Beezus, book by Beverly Cleary -- this week is all about family and creating a book about those wacky people
we call our relatives. Would like to organize an all-out family day including a trip to the park with picnic and games with moms and dads
and anyone else who can make it.
July 11-15 Curious George, book by Margret and H.A. Rey -- go on our own "in-town" adventures and visit some of our local neighbors,
make banana cream pies, and see some real "monkeyin" around at Rolling Hills Refuge or the Sedgwick County Zoo.
July 18-22 Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, book by Ron and Judi Barrett -- eating our own Italian creations, learning about weather
systems, visiting KWCH weather lab or meeting with storm chasers.
July 26-29 Meet the Robinsons, book by William Joyce -- a week of inventions: mechanical, wood, food, etc. We may even set up
booths so moms and dads can see our genius at work. Also, what if time travel were possible? Where would we go?
August 1-5 The Water Horse, book by Dick King-Smith -- create creatures that the world has never seen, go on an excursion in
search of mssing eggs from the past, take our annual trip to Salt City Splash and get wet ourselves.
August 8-12 Because of Winn Dixie, book by Kate DiCamillo -- have a pet day where we can show off our real pets from home
(or if you don't have a pet, stuffed) make some puppy chow for us and visit a favorite spot, the Helping Hands Humane Society,
where we will do some volunteering.
Monday -- Library and free swim
Tuesday -- "Cooking" with our book themes
Wednesday -- Field trip or major activity
Thursday -- Free swim
Friday -- Movie day with film relevant to the session
